If you're planning to propose over the holidays and you want a ring designed rather than pulled off a shelf, the question you're really asking is a scheduling one: how late can I leave this? So let me answer it plainly before anything else.

For a December proposal, plan to start your custom engagement ring by early-to-mid October — about eight to ten weeks out. If you have your heart set on a natural stone with specific parameters, give yourself closer to twelve. Rush it much past that and you're either paying a premium or compromising on something, and I'd rather tell you that now than in November.

The real timeline, week by week

Here's what those eight-to-ten weeks actually hold. This is my studio's process, not a generic estimate:

• Weeks 1–2 — Consultation & design. We meet, talk through the stone, the setting, the hand it's going on. I turn that into sketches and a CAD model you can approve.
• Weeks 2–4 — Revisions & stone sourcing. We refine the CAD until it's right, and I source the center stone. This is the step that stretches when a natural diamond or sapphire has to be found to spec.
• Weeks 4–7 — Casting & setting. The metal is cast, the stone is set by hand, and the piece is built for real.
• Weeks 7–8 — Finishing & final approval. Polishing, a final look under the loupe, and any last sizing. Then it's in your hands, boxed, well before you need it.

Notice where the slack lives: sourcing. A lab-grown stone can often be secured in days. A specific natural stone — a particular size, color, and clarity — can take weeks to find. That single choice moves your start date more than anything else.

Why I won't just rush it

I could technically compress this. I don't like to, and here's the honest reason: the two steps that suffer under a rushed clock are stone sourcing and setting, and those are the two that matter most. Hurry the sourcing and you settle for a stone you don't love. Hurry the setting and you get a ring that looks fine today and loosens in a year. Neither is a trade I want you making on the most important ring you'll ever buy.

The reframe I offer every client in a panic in late November: the most romantic thing isn't a ring that barely made the deadline. It's one nobody had to rush — designed calmly, set properly, and ready with time to spare.

What to do if you're already cutting it close

If you're reading this in December, you still have good options — you just propose with a beautiful placeholder and design the ring together afterward, which many couples genuinely prefer.
