"I'd love something custom, but I have no idea where to start."
I hear this almost every week. The idea of custom jewelry is appealing — something designed just for you, made to fit your style and story — but the process feels mysterious. How long does it take? How much does it cost? Do I need to know exactly what I want before I walk in?
Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how custom fine jewelry actually works at my studio, from first conversation to finished piece.
Step 1: The Conversation
Every custom project starts with a conversation — not a sketch, not a spec sheet, just a talk. I want to understand who you are, what you wear, how you live your day, and what this piece means to you.
Some clients come in with a Pinterest board and a clear vision. Others come in with nothing but a feeling: "I want something that reminds me of my mom" or "I need a ring I can wear every day that isn't boring." Both are perfect starting points.
If you have existing jewelry you'd like to incorporate — inherited stones, gold from old pieces, a diamond from a ring that's no longer your style — bring it along. Working with your materials is one of my favorite things to do.
This first meeting is free, takes about 30-45 minutes, and there's absolutely no obligation.
Step 2: Design and Concept
After our conversation, I go to work on concepts. Depending on the complexity of the piece, this might be hand sketches, digital renderings, or both. I'll present 2-3 directions and we'll talk through what resonates.
This stage is collaborative. I'll push you toward what I think will look best — that's what you're hiring me for — but you have full input. We'll refine until the design feels exactly right.
For engagement rings and complex pieces, I often create a wax model or 3D print so you can see and hold the shape before we commit to precious metals and stones.
Step 3: Sourcing Materials
If we're using your existing materials, I'll assess them during or after our first meeting. I'll tell you honestly what can be reused and what can't.
For new materials, I source stones and metals specifically for your piece. I work with trusted suppliers and can source virtually any gemstone — from classic diamonds to unusual colored stones. I'll present options with photos and pricing so you can choose what fits your budget and taste.
Step 4: Crafting
This is the part that happens in my Santa Monica studio (and, for certain technical processes, with my trusted production partners). Depending on the piece, crafting involves casting, hand-setting stones, finishing, polishing, and quality checks.
I'll send you progress updates along the way. There's something special about seeing your piece come to life.
Step 5: The Reveal
You come pick up your piece — or I ship it in beautiful packaging if you're not local. This is my favorite moment. Seeing someone put on something that was designed specifically for them, watching their face when it's exactly right — that never gets old.
How Long Does It Take?
Typical timelines:
A simple custom band or pendant: 3-4 weeks. A custom ring with stone sourcing: 4-6 weeks. A complex piece or engagement ring: 6-8 weeks. Rush projects are sometimes possible — just ask.
I always recommend starting early if there's a deadline involved (proposals, anniversaries, holidays).
What Does Custom Jewelry Cost?
This is the question everyone wants answered, and I respect that. Here's the honest range:
Simple custom pieces (a personalized band, a pendant with your stone): starting around $800-1,500. Mid-range custom pieces (rings with diamonds or gemstones, detailed designs): $2,000-5,000. High-end custom work (engagement rings, multi-stone pieces, complex designs): $5,000-15,000+.
These ranges depend on materials (gold vs. platinum, diamond size and quality, gemstone rarity), complexity of the design, and whether you're providing existing materials.
The good news: working with your own materials — inherited gold, existing diamonds — can significantly reduce the cost since you're not buying those from scratch.
I'm always transparent about pricing. You'll know the investment before we start crafting.
Do I Need to Be in Santa Monica?
Nope. About half my clients work with me virtually. We do video consultations, I send photos and renderings digitally, and ship the finished piece with full insurance. The process works beautifully remotely.
That said, if you're in the LA area, an in-person visit to the studio is always a great experience.
Ready to Start?
If you've been thinking about a custom piece — whether it's reimagining something old or creating something completely new — I'd love to hear what you have in mind. The conversation is free, and there's no pressure.
