If you're shopping for diamond jewelry right now — whether it's an engagement ring, a pair of earrings, or a treat-yourself moment — you've probably run into the lab-grown vs. natural debate. And if you've Googled it, you've likely found strong opinions on both sides, a lot of marketing spin, and not much clarity.
As someone who works with both lab-grown and natural diamonds every day, here's what I actually think — and what I tell my clients.
They Are Both Real Diamonds
Let's get this out of the way first. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same chemical composition, the same crystal structure, the same hardness, and the same optical properties as mined diamonds. A gemologist cannot tell them apart with the naked eye. They are graded on the same 4C scale.
If someone tells you lab-grown diamonds are "fake," they're either misinformed or selling you something.
Where They Differ: Origin and Price
The meaningful differences come down to two things: how they're made and what they cost.
Natural diamonds formed over billions of years deep in the earth and were brought to the surface by volcanic activity. Lab-grown diamonds are created in weeks using high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes that replicate those natural conditions.
On price, lab-grown diamonds typically cost 60-80% less than comparable natural diamonds. That gap has been widening as production scales up. A 1-carat lab-grown diamond that might have cost $3,000 a few years ago can now be found for under $1,000.
The Value Conversation
Here's where I get honest with clients: lab-grown diamonds are not an investment. Their resale value is minimal and continues to drop as supply increases. Natural diamonds hold their value better — though calling any diamond a financial investment is a stretch unless you're dealing with extremely rare stones.
What does this mean practically? If long-term value matters to you — say, you want to pass the piece down and have it retain worth — natural diamonds are the safer bet. If you want maximum size and sparkle for your budget right now, lab-grown is hard to beat.
What I Recommend (It Depends)
I don't push clients toward one or the other. It genuinely depends on what matters to you.
Choose lab-grown if you want a larger stone for less, you're drawn to the environmental angle (though this isn't as clear-cut as marketing suggests — lab production is energy-intensive), or if the "how it was made" part simply doesn't carry emotional weight for you.
Choose natural if the geological story matters to you, you want the piece to hold value over decades, or the idea of wearing something billions of years old feels meaningful. For some of my clients, especially those using inherited stones, natural diamonds carry irreplaceable sentimental significance.
Consider mixing both. Some of my favorite pieces combine a natural center stone with lab-grown accent diamonds. You get the heritage of a natural diamond where it counts most, with the budget efficiency of lab-grown for the supporting cast.
What Actually Matters More Than Origin
Honestly? The cut matters more than whether the diamond grew in the earth or in a lab. A well-cut diamond — natural or lab-grown — will outperform a poorly cut one every time in terms of brilliance and beauty.
The setting matters. The craftsmanship matters. Whether the piece fits your hand, your style, and your life matters.
I've seen clients agonize over this decision for months and then realize, once the ring is on their finger, that what made it special was the intention behind it — not the origin certificate.
My Approach at Kate Rose
I work with both. I source natural diamonds for clients who want them and lab-grown for clients who prefer them. I'm transparent about the differences, and I'll always recommend what makes sense for your specific piece and budget.
The best diamond for you is the one that makes you feel something when you look at it. Everything else is details.
