How Much Does Jewelry Redesign Cost? An Honest Breakdown

It's one of the first questions people ask — and one of the hardest to answer with a single number. Jewelry redesign pricing depends on what you're starting with, what you want to create, and how complex the work is. But you deserve better than "it depends," so here's a transparent look at what different types of redesign work actually cost.

Note from Kate: Every project is unique, and these are general ranges based on our studio's work and industry standards. The best way to get an accurate quote is through a consultation where we evaluate your specific pieces. Ours is always complimentary.

Jewelry Redesign Pricing at a Glance

Ring redesign (new setting, same stone) $800–$2,000 2–3 weeks

Multi-piece combination (several pieces into one) $1,500–$4,000+ 3–5 weeks
Custom engagement ring (from scratch or heirloom stone) $2,000–$6,000+ 3–5 weeks
Gold melting and recasting $400–$1,200 2–3 weeks

What Affects the Price

The complexity of the new design

A straightforward solitaire reset is simpler (and less expensive) than a multi-stone custom design with intricate metalwork. The more detailed the design, the more bench time your jeweler needs — and bench time is where most of the cost lives.

The metal you choose

If you're reusing the gold from your heirloom pieces, your metal cost drops significantly. If you need to add new gold or platinum, that's an additional material cost. Platinum is typically more expensive than gold due to its density and the skill required to work with it.

Additional stones

Using your existing stones? That's included in the redesign cost. Adding new accent diamonds, a halo, or side stones means additional material expense. Lab-grown diamonds offer a more affordable alternative without sacrificing beauty or durability.

The condition of your original pieces

Pieces in good structural condition are easier to work with. Heavily worn gold, damaged settings, or stones with hidden cracks may require extra work — or in some cases, may not be suitable for reuse. This is something we always evaluate during the consultation.

What's Included in Our Pricing

At Kate Rose Fine Jewelry, our redesign quotes include the complete process from start to finish: complimentary initial consultation and piece evaluation, custom design sketches or digital renderings, all metalwork and stone setting, finishing and polishing, a 60-day warranty on craftsmanship, and complimentary U.S. shipping.

There are no hidden fees. The quote you receive after your consultation is the price you pay.

Redesign vs. Buying New: Is It Worth It?

People sometimes wonder whether redesigning is more expensive than just buying something new. The answer depends on what you already have. If your heirloom contains a quality diamond and solid gold, redesigning is almost always more cost-effective than buying an equivalent new piece — because you already own the most expensive materials.

A one-carat diamond that might cost $4,000–$8,000 to purchase new is already in your jewelry box. Redesigning it into a modern setting might cost $800–$2,000 — a fraction of starting from scratch. And you get the irreplaceable bonus of wearing a piece with family history.

How to Get an Accurate Quote

The most reliable way to know what your specific project will cost is to bring your pieces to a jeweler for evaluation. During a consultation, we assess the gold purity and weight, examine stone quality and condition, discuss your design preferences, and provide a detailed quote with no obligation.

You can start the process with photos — send us images of your pieces along with a description of what you're imagining, and we can give you a preliminary range before you commit to an in-person visit.
